Simpro offer Environmental Stress Screening (ESS) of equipment that must withstand specific stresses. ESS can be done for ongoing production, or in connection with the testing and qualification of new products. ESS tests include mechanical and thermal stress on the product.

With 8 years of experience and over 4 000 ESS tested units, Simpro has gained considerable expertise in ESS testing. Contact us today to discuss how we can help you with your ESS needs.

Simpro can offer ESS tests for

  • Development
ESS tests during the development stages
  • Q1 and Q2 Qualification
ESS tests as part of the preparation prior to a formal qualification of the product
  • Production
ESS testing as part of the ongoing production

In addition to the actual execution of the tests, Simpro offers a complete ESS program including

  • Test Development
  • Planning and Execution of tests
  • Documentation

Simpro perform ESS according to

  • ISO 13628-6 Petroleum and natural gas industries — Design and operation of subsea production systems — Part 6: Subsea production control systems.
  • IEC 60068-2-6 Sine vibration
  • IEC 60068-2-64 Random vibration

Test according to other standards are done upon request.

ESS – Background
ESS is the process of exposing a product to environmental stresses in order to identify and eliminate latent defects. After ESS, the remaining product population will have a higher reliability than a similar unscreened population due to the resultant elimination of infant mortality defects. The screening process can range from providing a basic check of an electronic system prior to shipment (burn-in) to the application of much more severe environmental profiles, including temperature and vibration cycles at extreme limits.

The benefits of screening depend on the maturity of the manufacturing process, more mature processes expected to introduce fewer defects. It is estimated (Telcordia SR-332, Issue 1) that the failure rate of a system population is up to four times higher at initial deployment than it will eventually be after one year. This means that if no ESS is performed, it will take up to one year for the population to naturally reach the expected steady state failure rate observed during the useful life period.
